Why are we decorating so early for Christmas?

Recently, I read an online post that reported that “happier people decorate early for Christmas.” It was a way of justifying the need to decorate for Christmas, essentially right after Halloween.

Personally, I’ve always decorated for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving. We don’t typically travel over Thanksgiving, so it gives us something to look forward to. But that idea really got me thinking. Growing up, I don’t recall decorating quite so early, and it makes me wonder: Why has there been a trend to start decorating for Christmas earlier and earlier?

I get it, the stores are LOADED with Christmas items, so the urge to purchase and “deck the halls” is definitely alive and well. But I have some other thoughts on the matter.

What is it about Christmas that is so appealing? The twinkling lights? The act of giving? The time with family? I think those things are special, but I believe it’s more than that. I think it’s hope.

I believe that the Christmas season gives us hope. It gives us something to look forward to that is joyous and comforting. The warm cookies, the time with family, and the seasoned traditions give us hope for more of that same feeling all year long.

So while I will still decorate the weekend of Thanksgiving, I wish all of you well that are busy decorating throughout the month of November.

May this season bring you love and hope… and all you wish for!
